Using Pre-canceled Stamps to Increase the Personalization Effect

Using pre-canceled stamps to increase the personalization effect is a good idea. However, they still look rather mechanical and manufactured with the words "presort" or "bulk" built right into the stamp. There is a way to make a pre-canceled stamp look more handmade, although somewhat infrequently used because it does involve an extra production step. A mailer can cancel mail and still obtain presort and automation discounts. A mailer must request authorization to preprint rate markings on pre-canceled stamps or to use a pre-canceled postmark on adhesive stamps, stamped envelope, and stamped cards. The applicant must submit a specimen mail piece showing the preprinting method or proposed pre-canceled postmark. If more than one preprinted marking is prepared, or more than one format is used, a specimen for each must be submitted. Form 3615 must be endorsed "Preprinting of Rate Markings," or "Mailer's Pre-canceled Postmark," or both, as appropriate. Start with your local postmaster on how to get started and how to receive authorization.
